RES PRINCIPAL'S BLOG TO STAFF - Sun., Aug. 20, 2017

Dear Hardworking Staff,

And the new school year is about to begin!  I am finally finished with my 5 grad classes over the summer and am fully immersed in all things Reading Elementary.  My husband and I have been in daily and nightly putting the finishing touches on things.    I'm so excited about the new school year and the new additions to our staff!  It's going to be an AWESOME year!  Happy Eclipse!

KUDOS to STAFF Who "Stepped Up":
  • Amy for all her hard work getting the school clean and ready!
  • All of you who have stopped by during the summer and worked in your rooms!
  • Lisa K. for providing summer art opportunities for our students!
  • Heather who has agreed to be our "kitchen substitute" until we can find someone for her position.
Important Items to Know:

Summer Maintenance - There were several improvements made to the building over the summer, including the wood in the front lobby being resurfaced.  PLEASE do not put beverages on wood surfaces without a coaster.  Window sills in the K and PK room will be replaced with formica as the wood was beyond repair.  The grant for the security improvements has finally been approved, so improvements will continue once school has started.  This includes mag locks for your doors to make it easier to comply keep your door open safely and yet be able to close during a fire or lockdown, and a camera on the front and back of the building for security purposes.

Message from Secretary Holcombe - Please read the attached LETTER.

Orders - Due to a very tight budget, all orders must be pre-approved prior to ordering anything.

School Supply List - We are asking families to spend no more than $15. on school supplies, as they help us "make the ends meet."  Please complete the Google Doc I have shared with you.  I will post your list in next week's blog.

Composting - So this year we will be participating with a company that specializes in composting - Grow Compost VT.    You will see more on this as the year progresses.

Staff Retreat - Please bring a refillable water bottle.  We will be having breakfast and dinner there.  Please bring last year's folder and copies of the Action Plan.  I will bring copies for our new staff.  I will send out the agenda on Thursday for your review.

Staffing Update - I have an interview this week with a potential Special Ed./Interventionist candidate at the SU.  I have interviewed several possible candidates for the custodial work.  I will keep you informed.

New Staff - We welcome Joan Nagle as our General Education Paraeducator (formerly Sherry's position.)  Joan is highly qualified and we are so glad she's joining us!  Jill Tofferi will be joining us as Guidance Counselor.  She was in last week with Mary Dolan and is excited about joining our family.

Parent Blog - For those of you who are new to us, I put things in the "parent's" blog that I don't put in this blog, so please read both of them so you are aware of what's going on.

Supplies - Most supplies have come in, but there are still several expected this week.  Please send Cathy an e-mail with any outstanding orders if you don't have them by Thurs. Please remember I cannot reimburse purchases you make unless they have been pre-approved by me.

Building Hours - Just a reminder to all that the new building alarm hours are 10 PM to 6 AM.  PLEASE see me if you don't remember your code.

Floors Stripped - The floors have been stripped and they look wonderful.  PLEASE do your best to encourage students NOT to drag chairs on the floor.  We have "tennis ball" bottoms ordered.

Schedule - The DRAFT schedule is ready for your review.  We know it's going to be tweaked so put your thinking caps on and let me know your suggestions, etc. on how to make things better if you have an idea.  Guidance will be on Wed. and Friday, so you will work with Jill to schedule that.

Principal Hours - For those of you who are new, I am paid as a part-time principal.  I am principal 3 days a week, and one day a week(Fri.) I put on my library-media/ed. tech hat.  On the days when I am NOT in the building, usually the nurse and the admin. asst. handle things.  I can be reached via cell phone with an emergency.  When the schedule says, Cathy "OFF" it means I am not in the building that day.  It happens to be Tuesdays because that's when our nurse, Jean Chick is here.  Again, Sherry can reach me if need be, but I am not in the building those days.  On my "teacher" days, I defer to the admin. asst. or guidance counselor to handle discipline, etc. while I teach.  If it's an emergency, they take over for me in library and I deal with the emergency.  Please see me with questions.

RES PRINCIPAL'S BLOG TO STAFF - Sun., June 11, 2017

                    Dear Dedicated Staff,

It's hard to believe this is the last staff blog of the school year.  Thank you for taking the time to read it even though you are crazy busy with end of year items.

I want to commend those of you who are ALWAYS professional and focused on students, and kind and courteous to your colleagues and myself.  We all have an exhausting job, but it's time for a well deserved rest.

Change is always a challenge.  I applaud those of you who accept and welcome change with a positive attitude and as an opportunity for growth.  I hope you have a rejuvenating summer.  I'd love to have our returning staff over to my home for a cook-out in late August.   I'll be sending out an e-mail to those of you who check it.  I'll be in and out throughout the summer, so don't hesitate to text me if you have any questions.

We wish Beth Ann, Libbet, Greg, and Pam the best as they begin their next leg of life's journey!  You will be missed!

KUDOS to STAFF Who "Stepped Up":
                    • Liza K. for allowing her Artwork to stay up in the MPR - it makes it so bright and cheery!
                    • All of you who have taken out radios for recess duty and outside field trips with your class.
                    • All of you who have provided input in the Parent Blog throughout the year.
                    Important Items to Know:

Insurance Forms 2017-18 - I e-mailed these to you Friday and hard copies were put in your box.  Please make sure these forms are put in the SU mail to Linda on Monday.

Building Hours - Just a reminder to all that the new building alarm hours will be starting Monday, June 19, 8 AM - 8 PM.  If you don't remember your code for the alarm, please let me know ASAP.

Goals for 2017-2018 -  According to Superintendent Worth, our goal sheets have been completed incorrectly.  She accepted the 2016-17 though they were incorrect, but we need to redo the 2017-18 ones.  The column to the right is not to be completed, and two of your forms' headings had been changed.  Please submit your goals/summative form to me on a Google Doc so that I can reprint it as she has requested and have you sign it again.  Then I can submit them to her again.

Floors Stripped - The Pre-K & K room floors will be done after Wed., June 22.  The nurses' office and special ed. room will be done next Thurs. & Fri.  The cafeteria will begin being stripped Sat., June 24.  Please do not walk on the multi-purpose room floor if it's being worked on.  We will have signs on the doors as well during this time.  The rest of the floors in the building look so much better after they have been stripped, waxed, and polished.  Check out the upstairs' bathrooms!

Summer Maintenance - There will be several improvements made to the building over the summer, including mag locks for your doors to make it easier to comply keep your door open safely and yet be able to close during a fire or lockdown, and a camera on the back of the building for security purposes.

Non-Returning Staff - We will miss you!  Please make sure you turn your keys, computers, and passwords to Libbet before you leave.   Also, please leave a forwarding e-mail and mailing address so that I can forward your e-mail/mail to you for the summer.

Orders - Due to a very tight budget, all orders must be pre-approved prior to ordering anything.  Also, we're trying to order in bulk if possible to reduce costs.  If you purchase anything on your own, it will not be reimbursed.  A google sheet has been created for you to be able to request your items.  I will be sending you a link to W.B. Mason for supplies as well.  Please check School Specialty and W.B. Mason to see which one is the least expensive.  The amounts you have to spend for 2017-2018 based on the approved budget  will be e-mailed to you Monday.

School Supply List - We are asking families to spend no more than $15. on school supplies, as they help us "make the ends meet."  Please complete the Google Doc I have shared with you.  I will post your list on the website after July 1.

Classrooms - Every decision that's made in a school should be focused on "What's best for kids."  Not just a classroom of students, but the whole school.  One of the things we may be doing this summer is moving some classrooms around.  Based on input and experience with our Gr. 1/2 classroom next year, students really need to have a sink IN the classroom, not around the corner out of vision, and the same thing goes with the bathroom.  Also, classes that typically go outside a great deal, it may be better for them to have an easy exit.  Another consideration for this is library books and access for children.  We have many library books that students don't have access to because they are in classrooms where teaching is happening when they are having library.  So relocating the library is one of the summer projects this year by possibly putting shelves in the hallway and using part of the "old library" and special ed. room.  This is all in the early planning stage and we will be discussing it briefly at the retreat.  If you'd like to meet with me to discuss this, please let me know when you are available.

RES PRINCIPAL'S BLOG TO STAFF - Sun., June 4, 2017

                                    Dear Dedicated Staff,

This is the time of year when the clock is ticking as loud as the alligator's on the old cartoon of Peter Pan - you feel like Captain Hook always aware of the clock!    As yucky as the weather has been, it's actually a good thing for keeping the "summer itch" down to a minimum.  This week's weather looks better, so it's a great time to learn outside!

Also, I recognize this is a very independent staff, but please run plans by the office so we know what's happening.  If I don't know I schedule things guest speakers, coaches, etc., so please keep me in the loop.   Please fill in the Google Docs for times to meet with the literacy coach on Fri.

                                                    Dear Dedicated Staff,

Unbelievable -  only 11 1/2 student days left!  Let's be present with our students and ENJOY the time with them - this is the time for memory making.  Let's remember to breathe and cherish the time with them AND each other!

Here's an interesting thought from Eric Jensen who was a keynote speaker at a Vermont's Principal's Conference last summer.  For those of you who want to know more about Eric Jenson's Brain-Based Teaching, you can learn more HERE.

KUDOS to STAFF Who "Stepped Up":
                                                    • Jen and Pam for their work organizing the flag remembrance for Memorial Day.
                                                    • Pam for providing me pictures for the blog of the event and of her class!
                                                    • Sherry for being so flexible and understanding about helping cover the holes!
                                                    • Beth Ann for inviting us to come to her room to be part of their celebration of their writing projects!
                                                    Important Items to Know:

DRIVER LIST - Please provide your driver's list 24 hr. in advance to Libbet.  IF a driver changes, work with the office to find coverage.  The office does their best to try and NOT pull paraeducators or subs knowing that they are scheduled elsewhere.  IF its our last option, then we appreciate teacher's flexibility in doing without that assistance.  In many multi-level grades in the SU, there are not paras available on a daily basis.  We are thankful that we have professional, competent staff who can roll with changes without a negative word or complaint!

GUIDANCE CANDIDATE - The guidance candidate will be coming BACK to work with the students on Thurs. & Fri. where we can observe her interacting with the students.   I have shared with you a Google Doc with you to have your class meet with her.  Please write in your class name for a time.  Thanks!

END OF YEAR EVENTS - If you're planning anything special with your class as the year comes to a close, please keep the lines of communication open and let the office know before things occur.

PROFESSIONAL EVALUATIONS - I need to meet with each of you briefly to review your summates and goals for next year.   Please find a time NEXT week that we can meet.  I shared a Google Doc with you for that schedule.  Thanks to those who have already signed up AND already turned in your goals/summative!

PBIS CELEBRATIONS - School-wide celebrations  are planned to celebration reaching our "respect" goals.
